What is Coda Music? A bit of history

The past few months have been eventful in the world of streaming. Significant issues have emerged, shaking up the music industry and its artists. The promise of Artificial Intelligence is as much a cause for hope as it is for concern. Artists continue to fight for their rights, battling the emergence of tools that dehumanize them and replace their work. The streaming giant Spotify has been the subject of both criticism and boycotts. In the wake of these scandals, more ethical, artist-oriented platforms have gained momentum, such as Qobuz. Music fans are switching from one streaming service to another—using Soundiiz, we hope!—transferring all their data to find a new home that aligns with their values.

Amidst the chaos of the streaming world, Coda Music stands out with its unique features. Since September 2025, it has been making waves consistently. But what’s the reality behind its distinctiveness?

Reading the press releases and the company’s presentation, it’s clear that Coda Music is not just another streaming platform. Its grand ambitions are rooted in ethics and a focus on artists, aiming to create a platform where the human dimension is omnipresent.

Clear goals

Coda Music’s objective is crystal clear: to provide an alternative to established platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. These platforms often offer low compensation to artists and heavily rely on artificial intelligence. Coda Music, on the other hand, aims to be an ethical alternative while still offering all the features expected from a streaming platform.

Artists like Eric Clapton and Evanescence have adopted Coda Music, helping promote it and drive word of mouth. Not insignificant: the platform benefits from major licenses and thus offers a massive catalog of songs. While the launch is now official in the United States and Canada, Coda Music is preparing for an arrival in Europe and Asia in 2026.

Randy Fusee, CEO of Coda Music, sums up the service in these terms: “Coda was born from a belief that music deserves better than the copy-paste streaming models we’ve all come to expect. Every major platform runs on the same algorithmic logic—prioritizing profit over artistry, and passive consumption over real connection. We’re rebuilding the middle class of artists and giving fans the power to shape what gets heard. It’s a return to authenticity, driven by community.”

In another statement, Coda Music even speaks of a “revolution.” The word is strong, but it demonstrates the company’s desire to build a world where artists, at the root of creation, are also at the root of an economic system that would benefit them. To understand the full implications of Coda Music’s launch and its objectives, we invite you to read this interview with Randy Fusee, Coda Music’s CEO, published by Music Business Worldwide.

What is Coda Music, how can you access it? An artist-centric platform!

Coda Music’s promise is simple, but challenging to implement: putting artists back at the center of the equation. This requires two significant measures. The first is the promise to offer higher compensation than all other streaming platforms. The second is the ability for Coda Music subscribers to donate one dollar from their subscription each month to an artist of their choice. The pricing for these subscriptions is in line with competitors: an Individual plan is $10.99 per month, and a Family Plan is $16.99 per month.

In practice, Coda Music promises that artist compensation can be between 10 and 100 times higher than the market rate. These are fine words, but they don’t translate, for the moment, into verifiable figures. But they at least have the merit of existing! In addition to these remuneration methods, Coda Music offers managers, rights holders, and other music professionals tools to manage their catalogs in real time, as well as reports on the impact of their music on fan communities.

Socials!

Coda Music also works with social media features directly integrated into artist pages. This is a way for artists to create live interaction and exchange, and to promote their music, beyond the usual social media platforms. They will also be able to sell merchandise and derivative products.

At Coda, posts are meant to be organic, never paid, and stand in contrast to traditional marketing strategies. In return, fans can share what they’re listening to in real time and interact with like-minded listeners. Human discovery? While this made sense twenty years ago, it’s clear that streaming platforms have long since abandoned this in favor of algorithms.

And Coda Music has made this return to human interaction one of its founding principles. All of this aims to create a virtuous circle between artists and listeners, breaking down barriers and putting music back at the center of attention.

At Coda, this also involves tailor-made music recommendations, free from artificial intelligence.

What is Coda Music, how can you access it, and can it change the music landscape?

Their motto? “From the crowd, not the cloud.” A beautiful phrase that ultimately sums up Coda Music’s promise: in an increasingly digitalized world, where humanity is being lost, returning to the basics is not only necessary but could prove beneficial for artistic creation. This is achieved by believing that music lovers are the best ambassadors. Coda Music, therefore, strives to be a community where fans and listeners exchange ideas and recommend music to one another. They are the ones who create playlists, surprise their peers with songs they’ve never heard, and allow artists to find their audience.

This logic is reminiscent of the forums and blogs that, in the early 2000s, acted as the main vectors of musical discovery. Before algorithms and streaming platforms took over.

Coda Music is thus a throwback, an ode to a past where machines dictated nothing, or almost nothing. In a societal context where the new generation tends to turn to the tools of the past or outdated trends to combat a world that sanctifies digital technology, Coda Music could be an interesting way out. Enough to shake up the streaming world? It’s still too early to tell: the platform only started making noise two months ago. It will take months, if not years, to assess whether Coda Music succeeds in establishing itself over the long term and amassing a sufficient user base to sustain its ideological and economic models.

Still, the proposition is interesting. It shows that, in the shadow of the industry giants, other, smaller players are trying to shake things up and reject the status quo.
