With the advent of streaming, many new platforms for listening to music have sprung up. Some of the best-known of these have established themselves legally and continue to be the record industry’s and its artists’ lifeblood. However, others have also emerged illegally and upset the balance of power. One of them is RiMusic. What is RiMusic, a brand-new music streaming service? We tell you all about it!
What is RiMusic?
Note: Soundiiz does not endorse a platform such as RiMusic under any circumstances. This article is simply intended to alert you to the proliferation of this type of platform, help you identify it, and detail the consequences.
A few weeks ago, we told you about Musi, one of the best-known streaming platforms in the U.S., which is popular with a young audience. Musi was free and attracted an audience with limited means. It faced numerous court cases until it closed its doors at the end of last year. Soundiiz has set up a system that enables you to recover your Musi data. You can find the procedure right here.
And out of the ashes of Musi, it looks like RiMusic is born. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of free alternatives to Spotify, Deezer, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music, Qobuz, or TIDAL. But in recent years, as streaming has become increasingly expensive—many services have raised their monthly subscription prices—entrepreneurs have been trying to exploit a loophole. RiMusic is no exception, and this is worrying.
Can music be free?
With almost one hundred million songs available, the platform, available on Android and iOS, is based on the YouTube Music catalog. In a way we’d prefer not to reveal, it has managed to retrieve data hosted by Google’s platform and offer it to its users free of charge. RiMusic is 100% free, with no fees and no advertising. As we all know, the price argument is often the strongest, and RiMusic has understood this.
Unlike Musi, whose interface left much to be desired, RiMusic offers a decent user experience. It allows you to create playlists, has a multilingual option, and can download songs so you can enjoy them without an internet connection.
You won’t find a link to download it here. Soundiiz is firmly opposed to the development of applications of this kind. On the other hand, we feel it is our duty to alert you to this type of initiative. So that you can grasp the scale of what’s at stake and, at your own level, take action against it.
What is RiMusic, and why is it a problem?
You know us: at Soundiiz, we’re very cautious about the notion of copyright. As RiMusic lies in a grey area and at looks like an illegal platform, we don’t endorse this service. It is important to support artistic creation, while artists are fighting for streaming platforms to pay them more. As a responsible user, it’s crucial to consider the impact of your choices on the artists you love.
Don’t be fooled: RiMusic looks like an illegal platform. It’s not affiliated with Google. It doesn’t mention YouTube Music and, because it’s 100% free, doesn’t pay the artists whose songs it plays. This poses a legal problem for copyright owners. But also with regard to YouTube Music and Google, who see their data exploited without any control. There’s no doubt that the tech giant will soon react and do everything in its power to shut down RiMusic. Or it will put up barriers preventing RiMusic from accessing its catalog. This could be the preferred solution, and one that would be quicker to implement. A technical block would surely be less time-consuming and costly than a lawsuit. This is a risk that users of RiMusic should be aware of.
So, there is a concern about ethics, and we are all the more worried when we see other music streaming services developing along the same lines. But it’s also a problem for the users themselves.
Users: a problem?
While the platform’s statistics are currently unknown, hundreds of thousands of people are likely using RiMusic at the time of writing. And it’s equally likely that RiMusic will cease to exist in the not-too-distant future. Google has an army of lawyers and legal experts who are no doubt building a case against RiMusic. What will become of its users?
They’ll probably lose all the data they’ve accumulated on RiMusic. All their playlists and catalogs. This potential loss of data is a serious concern for users. So what can be done? There are few solutions, unless Soundiiz, as we have done with Musi, develops a tool to recover data from RiMusic and transfer them to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, TIDAL, Deezer and elsewhere.
Subscribing to RiMusic might be tempting on paper. But it would be counterproductive in the long term. You wouldn’t be supporting artistic creation. You’d be benefiting from limited and rarely evolving functionalities. And you’d run the risk of losing all your data, without ever being able to recover it. Paradoxically, opting for 100% free software comes at a high price! It’s important to understand that using platforms like RiMusic can have legal implications, and it’s crucial to support legal alternatives that respect copyright laws and support artists.
Does Soundiiz work with RiMusic?
For the time being, our services are not compatible with RiMusic. We’ve told you: we don’t endorse what they’re offering. At Soundiiz, we believe in supporting the music industry and respecting the rights of artists. RiMusic’s business model, which operates in a legal grey area and does not compensate artists for their work, goes against these values. On the other hand, if you use Soundiiz, you’ll be able to do a multitude of things with your usual streaming services.
As the streaming market grew, the two founders of Soundiiz realized that music fans needed a service that would let them manage everything in one place. Moreover, they needed to move easily from one platform to another to take advantage of everything they had to offer, all without losing a single piece of data.
Our services enable you to manage your music library. With Soundiiz, you can transfer all your data from one platform to another, organize this data, import items into your streaming services, export others, create smartlinks, synchronize playlists, generate playlists via Artificial Intelligence, and much more! The list is long, as you can see. Soundiiz makes your music streaming experience more enjoyable and convenient, allowing you to seamlessly manage your music across different platforms.
We work daily to improve our offer and stay ahead of the trends. That’s why, for example, last year, we introduced our first Artificial Intelligence-based tool for generating songs, albums, and playlists. To try it out, click here.
